Yes, I got to go to Greenville, North Carolina and build my first ever dome superstructure from the ground up!
My trip there will be another story.
I had been regularly corresponding with Rob Lassiter who had created the first dodecahedron dome structure since way back in the 60s when it first was created at MIT - Massachusetts Institute of Technology. You see the dodecahedron is stronger than the traditional dome you see that was created by the super genius Buckminster Fuller. So now you do have the STRONGEST man-made structure on Planet Earth.
I arrived on Friday and Saturday morning dawned sunny and warm. I met Rob's friend Bob who also came to build the first 32 foot diameter dome too. In fact this was the first 32 footer for all of us!
The dome super structure is comprised of what are called struts and hubs. There are wood 2X6s for the struts which are color coded along with the plywood hubs also color coded. So if you are working with a green strut then you need to place it with a green hub. Truly simple enough for children to figure out and even I figured it out and within an hour was rolling along with no problems. In fact the HEAVIEST piece of the dome is a 7 pound strut!
What is so cool is that the super structure uses NO nails, latches, screws, etc. It is fasten together with wooden pegs or "bullets"as they are called and a rubber mallet! That is it!
You can see why we call it a giant Tinkertoy! Now for those to young to know what Tinkertoys are you need to find yourself a can of them ASAP! They also had struts and hubs that were color coded.
If you would like to see a video on how it goes together and then see Kevin's completed 32 footer then visit our site at 7th Haven Development to learn more.
The neatest thing about this dome is that you can build the entire super structure in THREE DAYS with a trained crew of 4 people! First day to build the Tinkertoy super structure. Second to place on the plywood triangles. And the third day to brush on the environmentally friendly HydroStop coating.
Also can you imagine building a 32 foot diameter home that has 800 square feet on the ground floor with an optional 200 square feet that can be used for a loft or balcony for $42,000 COMPLETE!
Where are you going to find a double wide modular for that price that also can withstand 200 mph winds!
