Story
I'm ashamed to admit it. But I was scammed by a man selling steak from the back of a truck. I was heading out to the grocery store, and a guy outside my building was standing by a freezer truck emblazoned with the words "Direct USA Foods." He told me he was in the neighborhood from way across town to make a delivery, but the recipients hadn't shown up. He asked me to help him out. He had to sell the meat before going home, and he would give me a deal.
I was immediately skeptical but for some reason, I didn't walk away. Con artists play on your greed, and perhaps I was smelling a deal. He offered six huge boxes full of steaks for $150. He showed me a shiny brochure proving they normally go for more than $300. Now, I'm no rube, and I started grilling him. "How do I know the steak is OK? What if there is a problem?"
He wrote his cell number on the brochure and told me he would take them back if there was any issue. I probably would not have fallen for the scam, but a neighbor of mine, Mikey, came out and said, "Oh, yeah. I think I have had these steaks before. They were pretty good."
"I can't buy meat from the back of a truck," I said. But Mikey told me, "This is L.A. A lot of good food comes from the back of a truck."
Now, you have to realize that I'm normally a Whole Foods shopper who frequents farmers markets and buys her meat organic. I'm also a yogi who is guilty (sort of) about her meat consumption. So I don't know what I was thinking. Temporary insanity, I suppose, but I bought the damned meat. As soon as I got upstairs, my husband looked at me and said, "What did you do? Are you crazy?"
He Googled the name of the company, and the first thing that came up was Ripoffreport.com. Then he found a news story from Chicago called, "Frozen Rotten." Apparently, the company has sold a lot of people bad meat in places where it's not licensed to sell food at all. My heart sunk. I am such a fool, I thought. Maybe this is the universe's way of telling me to go vegan. I whipped out the brochure and dialed the cell number the salesman gave. Some woman answered. It was a wrong number. I called the company number printed on the brochure. No answer.
By now, I was pissed. I read the fine print on the brochure, and it said you could only get your money back if you dropped off the packaged meat at one of their official locations in the same condition you bought it within three days. But no such location was listed on the brochure. You also had to send a letter to the company headquarters in Florida within three days requesting a refund. There was no way to get them a letter, get their approval and return it to some undisclosed location within three days when I couldn't even reach anyone on the phone to find out where to go.
I had obviously been had. Instead of sulking, I figured I had about 20 minutes before this guy cashed my check. I immediately got online and stopped payment. Luckily, the loss was merely a $20 fee rather than the $150. (I'd much rather the bank get my money than these con artists.) I kept the boxes of meat in my freezer for three weeks waiting to see if they would call about the aborted check. Finally, I tossed the meat.
A week later, one month after the original sale--they must have radar sensing when you have trashed the product--I got a harassing call from a woman at headquarters demanding payment. Fat chance. Without flinching, I lit into her about their deceptive practices. She said she wasn't responsible for her independent sales contractor lying to me. "What he does is his business," she said.
After 20 minutes of heated discussion, I hung up and called the LA Health Department and learned it was, in fact, an illegal sale. The company is not licensed to sell food in LA. In response to my complaint, the Health Department attempted to call the company in for a hearing, but the letter was returned to sender. I also filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau and learned they have an unsatisfactory rating with 47 complaints against them. They never responded to the BBB, either. Finally, I filed a complaint with a regulatory agency in the company's home state.
I haven't heard back from the company since then. But apparently Direct USA Foods still operates in multiple states across the U.S. So whatever you do, don't buy their meat. This company stinks.

Sorry, We just purchased our THIRD time from this company - The deal is WELL worth the savings, good quality meat, chicken - What's YOUR problem? The sales pitch is very old, similar to the guy who works for a jewler and sells real watches in a McDonald's parking lot ... It's all leget, just a different approach. I took some steaks to our local butcher & he not only complimented on the packaging, but the quality - as FIRST CLASS & admitted that he couldn't duplicate it for that price.. I game him a couple to try out & grilled some myself that night (Mar - '10) PERFECT! Our butcher also told me he was very satisfied with his steaks ... Bottom line, we have purchased from this company in So-Cal, Mich & Ohio ..... same quantity, same value, same QUALITY ... Yes they have a different approach to sales, but bottom line - A GOOD DEAL! Most of the roach-coaches in L.A. aren't even licensed or inspected ... It seems Jeneclectic didn't even TRY the products .... just stopped payment & tossed it away. -

I want to make a comment on Direct USA foods. Check this, I reply to an ad in the newspaper about working for a food whole sale company in Buffalo, NY. The dude who run's the shit , his name is Matty something, his office building is in 140 Walden Ave in Depew NY. Listen to this, I get to the facility and there are other people there looking for work as well as me. So Matty started to pitch us information on his product. He then pulled out these big black boxes called USA Food. One by one he pulls out Steak then another box with chicken in it. He said that we can make alot of money by selling by bulk, meaning "box". So I was like ok, maybe I can make some money. So the next day I come in and went out with a training to Rochester NY into the rural area. Cow country, lol. So I watched this dude work his magic. I was like who would buy from us. But there are people who would buy. Well after a couple of sells we went back to Depew NY main office. I went home for the day. I came back the next day, I went out with another person. Now this person I felt bad because he did not like working there. O' by the way, the companies name is called CHEF's CHOICE. So this guy tells me that "dam, I hate doing this, I ain't making any money" First Matty charges him $30 dollars for the truck rental, then this dude has to pay for his own gas which is like $40 a day. So thats like $70 a day if you don't sell a box. But you know what I have not heard any bad compliants from the customers. So I didn't come in for two days. I called Matty he tells me that this job isn't going to work out for me, and that I need to work everyday for him. You know what I did next, I said "ok you FAGET" then hung up on him. What a bitch. It was my fault to start with his company I should of done my research before gettting into a company like his. He ran his company from a little warehouse shop and a freezer. He drives a Mercedez Benz Silver, he try's to act like your friend but really he's not. I heard that one of his co x employee's fucked his wife but he till this day does not know about it. He has guys driving all the way to Pennsylvannia to sell meat. These guys come back with a lot of money. Matty charges $150 for a box of meat, so as a contractor for his company you can sell the boxes for whatever price you want. Also I read from a lot of poeple's compliants that every sales person sales the same "pitch" Sales pitch. Funny because when i was in training thats all I heard from them, tell the people "customers" that you're in the neighborhood making deliverings and you need to sell off these extra boxes. Funny I heard it to, I even used there sales pitch to convince customers to buy. Good thing I never sold any, I would of felted bad. I never made any sells when I was on those 3 days of training. Good thing I read this blog. If you like to meet Matty drop me an email territoryx2100 at yahoo dot com. I will direct you to his warehouse, mine you there is no name at the warehouse just a number. Ok well I guess i will go, so to hear everyone's feeling about the food. -

I am working on shutting them down in the NY, PA area my brother is in legal field, I was informed it is illegal to 1. solicate without having the proper permits 2. hire employees without drivers liscenses to work as a driver LOL 3. the warehouses are not inspected by any departments of the state ie; board of health to insure the freezers are working proper, the freezer they carry on the back of their trucks are non-working!! so your frozen meats have sat in a truck all day!! NASTY is the only word that comes to mind, if you love you family take the lost if you bought this food and throw it away!! -

Thanks for sharing an insider's perspective. I wish regulators could shut these crooks down.

Alright, lady, you are guily of fraud and general idiocy. You stopped payment on your check because of something you read on the internet?!? Never even tried the meat? You are the criminal, 'con man' in this case. There is noting wrong with this company's meat. I just tried my first steaks tonight and they were perfect. Guilt over a purchase doee not attone for what you did. You should be ashamed, or at least charged.
